Retail’s Future Unveiled: Key Tech Trends from NRF 2025
From January 12 to 14, Pyxis attended the most influential event in the retail industry, which brought together over 40,000 attendees in New York City. Representing Pyxis for the second consecutive year, Guillermo Segalerba and Jorge Pais immersed themselves in the latest trends and explored new opportunities to bring innovation to our clients.
Emerging technologies like Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) and Digital Experience Platforms (DXPs) are reshaping the future of retail. In this inaugural edition of our newsletter, we share the key highlights from the event and how we plan to integrate these trends into our technological solutions.
3 Key Trends
Artificial Intelligence as a Game-Changer
Major retail companies agree that AI will revolutionize the sector. During his keynote, Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, stated that AI “will lower costs, improve quality, help develop new customer experiences, and might even create new ways to do retail.”
One trend gaining momentum is the use of Computer Vision and Digital Twins to analyze physical stores. This enables data-driven decisions on store design, product marketing, and employee productivity. While virtual stores gather extensive customer journey data for decision-making, Computer Vision could replicate this model for physical stores.
As for Generative AI, 2024 focused on understanding the technology and identifying use cases. Now, its applications are clearer, and major tech players are integrating it into solutions to drive adoption. Examples include hyper-personalization and the creation of unique customer experiences, from tailored digital content like videos to customized imagery.
However, challenges remain. The quality of AI outcomes depends on the quality of the data used to train models. Companies vary widely in their data governance and analytics maturity, making robust data collection and analysis processes critical for any AI initiative’s success.
The evolution of CMS into DXP solutions
Content management systems are evolving into robust platforms that move beyond basic customer segmentation toward individualized marketing (hyper-personalization), powered by real-time, multi-source data.
The focus is on delivering dynamic, AI-driven recommendations tailored to each customer. Unified customer profiles now integrate behavior across virtual and physical stores. Additionally, omnichannel consistency is key, spanning websites, apps, physical stores, social media, and emerging channels like chatbots. To achieve this, businesses need unified content management systems that power everything from in-store digital signage to mobile notifications and orchestrate messaging across platforms to maximize marketing ROI.
The rise of D2C and Customer Communities
Manufacturers and brands are increasingly adopting direct-to-consumer (D2C) strategies to improve margins. Both online and in-store experiences are shifting towards building communities of advocates and fans rather than merely attracting buyers.
Hyper-personalization remains a cornerstone of successful D2C strategies, along with real-time adaptability to enhance the customer experience. Efficient logistics and fulfillment processes are equally vital, as delivery speed and reliability can make or break customer loyalty, particularly in highly competitive markets. Advanced order management systems (OMS) powered by AI are now capable of managing complex orders and optimizing processes to ensure timely deliveries.
