Pyxis launched its Environmental Commission to improve internal processes, measure impacts and make recommendations to minimize them in order to promote corporate sustainability.
The starting point is to take a picture of the current reality in order to identify the scenario where they are standing, make an assessment, draw conclusions and draw annual goals that will be accompanied by actions to promote the care of the planet and natural resources, on the way to continue on the path of being a triple impact company (positive social, environmental and economic).
Like Zero Waste, Pyxis’ successful project dating back to 2016, the creation of the Environment Committee is aligned with four of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. These are: responsible production and consumption (12), climate action (13), underwater life (14) and life of terrestrial ecosystems (15).
Along these lines, an important challenge set for 2022 was to measure the carbon and water footprint and draw up a plan to reduce them. Both variables will provide data and information to be taken into account in order to know what the environmental context is today and where to go.
So far, the company is working with the impact assessment of Sistema B, an international organization based in Uruguay that certifies companies in terms of triple impact. The results of the comprehensive questionnaire will guide and provide inputs for the commission to work on and improve its sustainability weaknesses.
Education will be another of the essential pillars that the Environmental Commission will seek to promote among the entire ecosystem. «All the actions developed to make Pyxis a more sustainable company can be transferred to homes,» said Mariana Silvera, one of the commission’s coordinators.
Use of LED lamps and composting are some of the actions already implemented under a sustainable tune. These will be joined by the initiative to evaluate the number of people who make corporate trips with a view to reducing the impact of greenhouse gases. Another task planned for the short and medium term is to review current suppliers and customers with a view to more responsible production and consumption. «We will look for those that help us meet our objectives and are aligned with our way of thinking,» said Mariana.
There are currently seven active members of this committee, but the great challenge is to involve all Pyxians in this great initiative and motivate them to participate. «The ideal is for each of the units that make up Pyxis to have a representative on the committee to ensure that the processes in their area are aligned».
Mariana also confirmed that Uruguay took the first steps to form this team, but the main goal for 2022 is to expand the Environmental Commission to the entire Pyxis operation.
